– The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is making serious moves to resolve its challenges ahead of the 2019 general election
– But while it is focused on this, its factional chairman, Ahmed Makarfi, has alleged that he and other members are being impersonated
This is as the party makes move to resolve the leadership crisis it has had to bear since losing the 2015 general election to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Makarfi noted, through a statement by Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the national publicity secretary of the party, that he does not have the Facebook and Twitter handles bearing his name and photographs. He also lamented that many of the party chieftains were suffering same fate from the impersonators.
“The attention of Leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to diverse comments regarding the closure of our previous official Twitter handle on the 5th of September, 2016 and the launch of a new official handle @officialpdpnig immediately. The action was necessary.
“Equally, we have observed that some elements are creating false social media accounts especially on Twitter and Facebook for some leaders of the party (past and present) with their photographs and purportedly publishing information on them to mislead the public.
“Recall that Senator Makarfi had through his SA (Media) earlier informed the public of this development and refuted ownership of any account. For the umpteenth time, we wish to reiterate that the national chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, CON, has no Twitter handle or on any social media platform at all. Be warned!” The statement read.
The party said the clarification has become necessary in view of the desire of its leadership to integrate all its members, teeming supporters and the general public on its new operations in view of its people-oriented rebranding and rebuilding agenda.
It also said for emphasis and in line with its constitution, the leadership of the PDP publicity division has the national publicity secretary who is the chief spokesman and image-maker.
It further said the party has an administrative head as enshrined in the its establishment manual, a document approved by the party’s constitution.
“Again, our decision to close the old handle and launch the new handle is to address the issue of unauthorized statements to the press on behalf of the party.
“Notwithstanding the above, we are hereby further encouraging party members to always stand up for the PDP in their personal or groups’ capacities through any medium of their choice.
“We also wish to use this medium and launch the following indigenous Twitter handles with immediate effect. They are: Igbo – @pdpnhqigbonig, Yoruba – @pdpnhqyorubanig, Hausa – @pdpnhqhausanig, Pidgin – @pdpnhqpidginnig,” the party said.
It urged its members to take advantage of the platforms to maximize interactions on the way forward for the party “as it is incumbent on the PDP as the main opposition in the country to rescue Nigerians from the scourge of recession, oppression, hunger, intimidation, autocracy, starvation, insecurity, economic induced suicides and mal-administration by the APC-led federal and states governments.
