Ikueria Oseme of Isiwu Senior Grammar School, Ikorodu and Wahab Zainab of Homat College, Lagos, at the weekend emerged winners of the male and female categories of the second edition of Oba Shotubi Independence Day Mini-Marathon, held to mark the country’s 2016 independence anniversary.
170 students from 30 schools in the Ikorodu Division participated in the annual sporting event, initiated last year by the Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Sanai Oyeniran Bolanle Agunbiade, representing Ikorodu Constituency I, among secondary school students in the constituency,
While Hamzat Habeeb of Oriwu Model College and Fatai Kazeem of Homat College, came second and third for the male category, Obarierhu Blessing of Homat College and Obarierhu Ese of Oreyo Senior Grammar School, also emerged second and third position, for female category, respectively.
The six-kilometer marathon, took-off from the Ayangbure road through Lowa, Water Corporation (Lagos Road), Ikorodu Garage Roundabout, Sabo Market, Kokoro Abu, Awolowo Road, Ota Ona, Obun Ale market, Ita Elewa, Ireshe Road, Sheriff junction, Igbogbo road, and ended at the Police Barracks Playing ground.
Aside the distribution of knapsack bags and certificate of participation to the participants, the first position winners got N50, 000 each with a trophy; second position-N30, 000 each; third position-N20, 000 each; fourth to 10th positions-N10, 000 each; while 11th to 20th positions got consolation prizes of school bags.
According to the initiator/sponsor, Agunbiade, the race is organised to commemorate Nigeria’s independence annually, by celebrating it in a unique way rather than just staying indoors.
