– Eden Hazard has disclosed he wants to play in the number 10 role for Chelsea
– The Belgian captain has been playing from the left side of attack for the Blues
– Hazard admitted Conte’s tactics does give room for a free midfield position
Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard has disclosed he would prefer to play in a central midfield role instead of playing from the flanks.
The 25-year-old has been handed a permanent role from the left side of the Blues attack since Antonio Conte’s arrival, but admitted he wants a more suitable position.
The Belgian captain acknowledges that he prefers to play in the number 10 position like he does for his country where he is being given a free role in midfield.
Hazard told ESPN: “I like to play as a No. 10. I think I have more freedom offensively. For Belgium, we have full-backs who run hard and create a lot of space, which is good and I like to play there.
“I don’t know if I will play there at Chelsea. You need to ask the manager! I play on the left hand side and I try to do the best I can.”
This season, Cesc Fabregas, Oscar and Willian all have been tested in the number 10 role but Hazard does not see himself given that kind of opportunity.
“It’s true I like to play as a 10. Sometimes at Chelsea we don’t play with system with a No. 10, too.
“I don’t think Chelsea wants to change just for me [to play] as a 10. I did well in the past as a left winger and for now, I am trying to get back to that best again,” he said.
Despite Hazard’s request, he was quick to praise the Italian coach for his physical condition into the current season unlike the sluggish start of the Blues campaign last season.
“We are fit because we ran a lot in preseason! You need to do this to stay at the top. We want to improve with this manager,” he said of the Chelsea manager.
“He is good. We started well with three wins, then we suffered two defeats after the international break and then we won again. He has tried to bring confidence to the players.”
The petite attacker has been in fine form for the London club this season as the Stamford Bridge giant began their revival from a 2015/16 disastrous season.
